Licensing Tips
In order to help some of our first-time customers, below is a list of common terms that we use to describe the various manufacturing steps required to take your creative work and turn it into a vinyl record that we hope you will be happy with and we will be proud of.
LICENSING SAMPLES
When licensing samples, what do I need to do?
As an example, if you sampled "Blue Suede Shoes" by Elvis Presley on the
RCA record label. A master license would need to be obtained from RCA as
the owner of that specific recording. AND a mechanical license would have
to be obtained from Harry Fox Agency to pay the royalties to the publishing
company, Unichappell, Inc. o/b/o Carl Perkins Music, Inc. This is so the
writer of the music is appropriately paid.
What is a master license?
The first license is a MASTER LICENSE, which is obtained from the original
owner of the work that is being replicated (ie: record label, movie, television,
etc). This license pays for the use of the exact replica of material owned
by the record label, artist, production company, etc.
What is a mechanical license?
The second license is a MECHANICAL LICENSE, which can usually be obtained
through the Harry Fox Agency (www.harryfox.com). The mechanical license
pays royalties to the writers/publishers of the material being used. If
the material is not available through Harry Fox Agency then the publishing
company would need to be contacted for this license.
